The custom of reading to laborers rolling cigars originated in Cuban factories in the 1860s. Classical literature, poetry and newspapers were read to workers as they sat intently at tables.

The lector or reader job was so vital, it became synonymous with the cigar industry. And then changes took away the unique way to pass long shifts.
