THE
level of smoking by young girls, in particular, was "alarming,"
Councillor Tommy McKeigue told the Midland Health Board last week.
He
praised the Board's efforts to help people give up smoking, but
feared that anti-smoking regulations at national level were not
being enforced.
Dr.
Patrick Doorley, Director of Public Health and Planning, said that
smoking was responsible for 7,000 deaths annually, mainly through
cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, chronic lung disease and other
cancers.
The
Board, through its Health Promotion Service and the Health Promoting
Hospitals Initiative, had been "developing a number of initiatives
aimed at combating smoking."
